A crack narrower than 1/4 inch is cosmetic. A crack wide enough to slide a nickel into, or one where the two sides sit at different heights, is structural. That distinction is the starting point for almost every decision about driveway repair, and most homeowners never check it before calling a contractor.
Start With the Cracks: Measure, Don’t Guess
Get down on your knees with a tape measure and a flashlight. Cracks fall into three categories, and each one tells you something different about what’s happening underneath.
- Hairline cracks (under 1/8 inch): Normal in asphalt and concrete alike. These come from shrinkage or minor temperature swings. Seal them and move on.
- Moderate cracks (1/8 to 1/2 inch): Worth watching. If they’re stable and not widening year over year, a crack filler or patch handles them.
- Wide or “alligatored” cracks (over 1/2 inch, or a spiderweb pattern): This is a base failure, not a surface problem. The gravel or soil underneath is shifting, eroding, or wasn’t compacted properly to begin with. Patching this area will crack again within a season.
Check for vertical displacement too. If one side of a crack sits higher than the other by more than 1/2 inch, that’s a sign of frost heave or a sinkhole forming underneath, not something a surface patch will fix.
Look at How Much of the Surface Is Affected
A single crack, a small oil stain, or one chipped corner is a repair job, usually costing between $100 and $500 depending on material and size. But if you count more than five separate problem areas across the driveway, or if cracking covers more than 25% of the total surface, you’re past the point where patching makes financial sense.
Here’s a rough guide contractors use in the field:
- Under 10% of surface affected: spot repair.
- 10% to 25% affected: resurfacing (a new layer of asphalt or a concrete overlay poured over the existing slab).
- Over 25% affected, or damage recurring in the same spots after repair: full replacement.
Resurfacing costs roughly $3 to $7 per square foot. Full replacement runs $8 to $15 per square foot for asphalt and $12 to $20 for concrete, depending on region and site prep needed. Once repair costs start approaching 40-50% of what a full replacement would cost, replacement is almost always the better long-term value because you’re not paying twice.
Check Drainage and Water Damage Separately
Water is the single biggest driver of driveway failure, and it’s often overlooked because the damage shows up somewhere other than where the water actually pools. Walk your driveway after a hard rain and look for:
- Standing water that takes more than a few hours to drain
- Puddles that always form in the same low spot
- Cracks running along the edges where the driveway meets the lawn or garage
- Soil visibly washed out from under the slab or asphalt edge
Standing water in one or two spots can sometimes be fixed by regrading that section or adding a drain. But if water pools across multiple areas, or if you can see daylight or gaps under the edges of a concrete slab, the base has likely eroded in a way that no surface treatment will correct. At that point you’re looking at excavation and rebuilding the base, which is most of the cost of a full replacement anyway.
Factor In the Age and What’s Underneath
Asphalt driveways typically last 15 to 20 years with regular sealing every 2 to 3 years. Concrete driveways last 25 to 30 years, sometimes longer with good drainage and no heavy freeze-thaw cycles. If your driveway is past its expected lifespan and showing multiple problems at once (cracking, potholes, fading, drainage issues), repair is a short-term patch on a system that’s failing overall.
You can get a rough sense of base condition with a simple test: press a screwdriver or awl into the edge of a pothole or crack. If the material underneath feels soft, crumbly, or spongy rather than solid and compacted, the base has degraded. Surface repairs sit on top of a bad base and fail again within a year or two, sometimes faster.
Also consider what’s original to the property. Driveways poured or paved decades ago without a proper gravel base (4 to 6 inches is standard) or without geotextile fabric in areas with expansive clay soil tend to fail faster and more completely, no matter how well they’ve been maintained. If your home was built before 1990 and the driveway has never been replaced, assume the base may need attention regardless of how the surface looks.
When to Call in a Professional Assessment
A paving contractor or a structural engineer (for larger or commercial driveways) can do what’s called a core sample test, drilling a small cylindrical section out of the driveway to check the thickness and condition of both the surface material and the base layer. This costs a few hundred dollars but tells you definitively whether you’re dealing with a surface problem or a foundation problem. It’s worth the money if you’re staring at a $3,000 repair estimate and wondering whether it will hold.
Ask any contractor who gives you a quote these three things directly: what caused the damage, whether the base is intact, and what the repair warranty covers. A contractor who can’t answer the first two questions is guessing, and you should get a second opinion before authorizing work.
If your driveway shows cracking or drainage problems in more than one area, take photos now, date them, and check back in three months. Damage that’s stable can wait for a scheduled repair. Damage that’s visibly spreading, especially before winter, needs a professional assessment within the next few weeks rather than at the end of the season.
